Electric or manual brushing?Which is best?

Regardless of the type of toothbrush you choose, it is crucial to brush twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste, and to combine brushing with daily interdental cleaning (cleaning between the teeth) for optimal oral care. It is also important to brush properly.

The benefits at a glance

Electric toothbrushes:

Cleaning effectiveness: Several studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque and reducing gum inflammation compared to manual toothbrushes. An electric toothbrush makes an average of 30,000 movements per minute. You can never match that with a manual toothbrush.

Since the toothbrush does the work for you, all you have to do is take your time and brush tooth by tooth—you don’t have to maneuver it too much to reach every part of your teeth.

Timer and pressure sensors: Many electric toothbrushes have built-in timers that ensure you brush for the recommended 2 minutes. Some models also have pressure sensors that alert you if you’re applying too much pressure, which can be beneficial for your gum health.

Using too much force reduces the effectiveness of your electric toothbrush. Not only will you damage your gums and enamel over time, but you’ll also prevent the toothbrush from rotating. As a result, it won’t be able to do its job properly.

Accessibility: Electric toothbrushes can be particularly helpful for people with limited manual dexterity or for those who find it difficult to brush effectively by hand.

Also for parents or informal caregivers , electric brushing can be helpful. It’s easier to brush someone else’s teeth properly with an electric toothbrush than with a manual one.

Different brushing modes: Electric toothbrushes often offer various brushing modes, such as daily cleaning, sensitive mode, gum care, and stain removal. These modes can be tailored to individual needs and preferences.

Manual toothbrushes:

Cost-effective: Manual toothbrushes are generally cheaper than electric toothbrushes, making them a more affordable option for many people.

Portability: Manual toothbrushes are compact, lightweight, and don’t require batteries or a charger, making them convenient for travel or for oral hygiene on the go.

Environmental impact: Manual toothbrushes do not require batteries or electricity, resulting in a lower environmental impact compared to electric toothbrushes.

Nowadays, you can also buy bamboo toothbrushes, and there are already toothbrushes made from eco-friendly materials.

Recommendation:

Both electric and manual toothbrushes can be effective when used correctly. Based on scientific literature and individual needs, the following recommendations can be made:

For people with limited dexterity, orthodontic appliances, or specific oral health issues (such as gum disease), electric toothbrushes can offer additional benefits in terms of plaque removal and overall oral hygiene.

For people who prefer to have manual control over their brushing technique or who are on a tighter budget, manual toothbrushes can still provide effective cleaning when used correctly and with the proper technique.

Consult your dental hygienist or dentist for personalized advice based on your specific oral health needs and concerns. Remember that the most critical factor in maintaining good oral hygiene is a consistent and proper brushing technique, regardless of whether you choose an electric or manual toothbrush. The best toothbrush is still the one the patient uses most effectively.

Bad breath or halitosis: how can you prevent it?

Bad breath or halitosis: how can you prevent it?

If you think your breath smells bad, that might not actually be the case. That’s because you can’t really smell your own breath. After a while, you get used to certain smells and stop noticing them. Think about the laundry detergent or perfume you use. You won’t notice it yourself anymore, but the people around you will let you know that you smell nice.
