A good daily oral care routine.
The Importance of Good Oral Health.
Oral health has a major impact on our quality of life. Poor oral hygiene can lead to pain, impaired chewing and speaking ability, bad breath, and cosmetic concerns. Oral health plays a role not only physically but also mentally. It even affects our social lives.
The mouth is connected to the entire body. This means that oral health also impact on overall health: Poor oral health increases the risk of conditions such as pneumonia and cardiovascular disease. Oral health issues also make it more difficult to manage diabetes.
Oral Care
Good oral care or oral hygiene is essential for maintaining optimal oral health. It’s not just the semi-annual visits to the dentist or dental hygienist that keep our mouths healthy, but also our daily habits:
Brushing your teeth
It is best to brush your teeth twice a day with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for two minutes. You should also clean between your teeth daily. You can do this with dental floss, toothpicks, soft dental picks, or interdental brushes. The tongue can also be cleaned using a tongue scraper. Do you have questions about which materials are best suited for you to keep your mouth healthy? A dental hygienist will be happy to help you with this! Nutrition
It’s not just brushing our teeth that’s important for our oral health—what and when we eat matters too. Acidic and/or sugary foods and drinks are the biggest culprits. Consumption of these should therefore be limited as much as possible. The number of meals should also be limited to a maximum of five per day: three main meals and two snacks. Tooth-friendly beverages include water, milk, tea, and coffee (always unsweetened). Also, make sure not to brush your teeth immediately after eating, but wait at least half an hour. Your dental hygienist will be happy to help you develop and maintain tooth-friendly eating habits. Here you can find more information.
The Flemish Institute for Oral Health “Gezonde Mond” developed basic guidelines for good oral care. This applies to both children and adults. On the website gezondemond.be, you can also find information for various target groups, including children, the elderly, people living in poverty, and people with disabilities.
Bad breath or halitosis: how can you prevent it?
If you think your breath smells bad, that might not actually be the case. That’s because you can’t really smell your own breath. After a while, you get used to certain smells and stop noticing them. Think about the laundry detergent or perfume you use. You won’t notice it yourself anymore, but the people around you will let you know that you smell nice.
